Modal Verbs in the Past
We use modal verbs in the past to express uncertainty or speculation about past actions. The structures are: 'may have + past participle' and 'might have + past participle' for uncertainty, and 'should have + past participle' and 'could have + past participle' for suggesting better or alternative actions.
